Uncle Ron’s Ramblings
If Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg’s name were anything but Kennedy would anybody be questioning her qualifications to hold a U.S. Senate seat.
The only question is why has she waited so long to throw her hat in the ring. Is it because her children are grown? Did her work for the Obama presidential campaign wet her appetite for politics.
Is it because there has been a Kennedy in the Senate her entire life--she was the born the daughter of a senator who became president--and with her Uncle Ted battling a deadly form of brain cancer that may not be true much longer. The seat which will become vacant if Hillary Rodham Clinton is confirmed as Secretary of State (which is a foregone conclusion with a Democratic majority in the Senate) was once held by Caroline’s Uncle Bobby.
Caroline has more experience than her Uncle Ted had when he became a senator--he barely met the age qualification and she’s older than her Uncle Bobby was when he ran. Her Uncle Bobby had served as Attorney General in the Kennedy administration.
She has the same qualifications as the incumbent junior senator from New York. She has a law degree from an Ivy League school, Columbia. She has practiced law. (We don’t know how many times she took the bar examination. Her attempts to pass the bar weren’t as well documented as her late brother John F. Kennedy, Jr.) She’s lived in the White House, for what that’s worth, during her father’s abbreviated term in office.
From a pragmatic standpoint her name is a plus--and New Yorkers are pragmatic people. She probably has as much practical experience as the other new senators being sworn in.
Minnesotans didn’t question what qualifications comedian and former talk show host Al Franken had to be a U.S. Senator, other than his Ivy League undergraduate degree from Harvard. His biography in Wikipedia didn’t list a graduate degree.
